Following the successful "Cut" album that brought the hugely popular “Twilight Zone” single back in 1982, GOLDEN EARRING’s 1984 offering “North East West South” – more commonly known as “N.E.W.S.” – may not live up to the audiences’ expectations, reaching the top of charts only in the Dutch band’s home country, yet that doesn’t mean the record hadn’t left a trace in people’s memory. There’s no better proof of this point than the use of “When the Lady Smiles” which was one of the ’45s the platter housed in Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2008 – without the ensemble’s permission – and there’s a lot to enjoy on there beside the controversial piece.
And there’s a lot of reason to pay attention to the 40th anniversary reissue of “N.E.W.S.” – remast ered and expanded to two discs – that will be out on November 15th. Alongside single versions, the fresh variant of the album boasts a generous collection of previously unreleased material, including outtakes, early runs-through and alternative mixes which, accompanied by a 36-page booklet, should make fans rejoice.
