Melanie Safka may have passed away in January of this year, yet the singer’s legacy lives on – although the “Beautiful People” single which will be released as a vinyl-only ’45 on September 6th seems to be her belated farewell. And a remarkable one at that. It features the veteran artist in the company of quite an unexpected, for her, musician: BAUHAUS’ own David J, also known for LOVE AND ROCKETS, who added both bass and vocals to this classic.
Produced by DIE KRUPPS’ Jürgen Engler and backed the acoustic mix of “To Be The One” that was prepared earlier in 2024, it’s a classic indeed. The perennially popular “Beautiful People” can be considered Ms. Safka’s calling card – first performed by the then-22-year-young songstress at Woodstock and has never lost its appeal.
But while the piece’s original version, also appearing on her “Affectionately Melanie” album back in 1969, was a completely solo endeavor, with the chanteuse playing guitar, this fresh reimagining of the evergreen promises to be electrifying to gather everyone together for a day and carry its message into eternity.
