Trying to grasp all the different strands that the alumni of Frank Zappa’s multiple ensembles embraced across their labyrinthine discographies seems nigh on impossible, but some of these players’ career resulted in not so many platters as one could assume. For instance under the belt of such prominent performer as Napoleon Murphy Brock is but a single solo album, “Balls” from 2019 – yet then, he’s one of a few former Frank associates who’s able to boast of winning a Grammy, for the delivery of “Peaches En Regalia” on a ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA record. Which is why the release of the veteran’s sophomore effort under his own name feels so exciting.
Out just now, “Bad Doberan & Elsewhere” finds the American multi-instrumentalist return to his mentor’s music and corral some of it in the company of Cologne’s ENSEMBLE MUSIKFABRIK who excel in bringing contemporary classical pieces to life – and did so, with Napoleon, at Zappanale#30 in 2019 to issue now wrapped in another FZ’s collaborator, Cal Schenkel’s artwork. Thrilling!
