Breaking Hiatus, SPLODGENESSABOUNDS Bring Back Punk Fun

July 11, 2024

For all their caricature stance, original British punks rarely demonstrated sense of humor in the songs that were supposed to antagonize and unite working-class audiences at the tail end of the ’70s, and while many of them, having matured, revealed such a streak, the unjustly forgotten SPLODGENESSABOUNDS made eliciting smiles the ensemble’s schtick from the very beginning, when Max Splodge decided parody was the way to go. Various pranks and jokes fueled the band’s existence for decades, since 1978 until now, with puns complementing melodic hooks on the two albums the collective laid down in the early ’80s, one from the early ’90s, and stars-infested two from the start of current millennium, but not a lot has been heard from the veterans for the last 23 years, although the group soldier on gigging, which was reflected in a couple of live releases. Still, August 2nd is to change it all.

John Martyn’s Classic Solo Concert Unsealed Anew

July 10, 2024

Never tiring of reinventing his approach to music while remaining faithful to his own creative tenets, John Martyn found it a tad difficult to go on tour in 1978 and perform material from his then-latest album “One World” due to this record’s experimental sonics. However, the Scottish musician couldn’t be intimidated by such insignificant obstacle; more so, the artist didn’t even think of bringing accompanists to the stage with him, and took to the road alone, with Echoplex and other effects in tow. One of the veteran’s shows, a concert at Hamburg University, was recorded for the “Rockpalast” TV series, and now there’s a chance to experience the atmosphere of his live gig in quality audio and video.

Steve Wynn Makes Right With Pals From THE BANGLES and R.E.M.

July 9, 2024

When THE DREAM SYNDICATE ceased to exist back in 1989 and Steve Wynn embarked on a solo career, his albums saw the light of day in a rather regular basis, although 2008’s “Crossing Dragon Bridge” signaled the end of the singer’s seven-year absence from studio, yet since then there’s been nothing original from him for the wide audience to indulge in. Wynn kept on issuing concert recordings and tribute platters, and, when his old band got together again in 2012, Steve was onboard as well, but “Make It Right” which will be out on August 30th finds the veteran in top form, once more weaving the spell on his own terms.

Rory Gallagher’s Legendary Guitar Is Up For Sale

July 9, 2024

Musician’s rather often come to be associated with a specific model of their instrument, yet it’s quite rare that a player’s name becomes almost synonymous with a particular tool of their trade. Still, it’s difficult to imagine Rory Gallagher without his 1961 Fender Stratocaster which featured so prominently in the late guitarist’s legend, as stressed by the recent BBC documentary. A long-coveted item for many of the great Irishman’s colleagues, the Strat with peeled off finish was never up for sale – until now.

Howard Jones Issues A Document Of His 2024 Show

July 8, 2024

It took about four decades for masses to recognize Howard Jones as an innovator he’s always been, the delay caused by the audiences’ reluctance to bestow such a title upon an artist associated with new wave and synth-pop, although the Brit’s peers knew his abilities from the beginning. That beginning came in 1983, with an immediate charts success of Jones’ debut single “New Song” which was followed by a string of further hits, and the recent expanded reissues of his early albums only stressed the cultural value of Howard’s oeuvre.
