TO TRIP IS NOT TO FALL
The 10-year wait is over now – or, to be precise, on October 26th, when Jimmy Page and Robert Plant’s “No Quarter: Unledded” finally makes it onto DVD. Originally shown on MTV and released on VHS, there’s more to it this time, with inclusion of the “Black Dog” performance at the American Music Awards, the bonus video “Most High”, a montage of footage from Morocco where some parts of the show was filmed, and a 13-minute interview with both culprits. One day before the issue date, special screenings are to be arranged in 35 Regal Entertainment Group cinema theaters.
Also on October 26th, out is the “No Quarter” re-issue, with “Yallah” re-titled “The Truth Explodes” and one or two, depending on the version of the original copy, bonus tracks: “Wah Wah”, that ten years ago was included on the album in some territories, and “The Rain Song”. The second season we’re to know, indeed.
WAYNE’S WAY
Some folks may not remember who he was, but Carl Wayne fronted not one but two legendary British bands. The first were THE MOVE, the heavy-weight psychodelic Brummies who spawned many a hit single and several mind-boggling albums, the second original purveyors of sweet beat THE HOLLIES with whom Carl’s been singing since 2000 after a solo career in theater and TV. No more, unfortunately – on August 31st, the singer passed away, aged 61. Goodbye, Blackberry Wayne…
NO “LOVE” LOST
With forthcoming “Rock ‘n’ Roll” re-release, this year’s not so over for John Lennon fans, as before 2004 ends there’ll be something less expected. Titled “Love: John Lennon Acoustic”, the compilation contains – at least, in Japan – previously unreleased versions of John’s well-known songs, recorded in unplugged form and partly issued on Lennon’s “Anthology”, and one song that makes its official debut here. And here they are, with newly dusted-off tracks marked with asterisk.
1. Working Class Hero 2. Love 3. Well Well Well * 4. Look At Me 5. God * 6. My Mummy’s Dead * 7. Cold Turkey * 8. The Luck Of The Irish 9. John Sinclair 10. Woman Is The Nigger Of The World 11. What You Got * 12. Watching The Wheels 13. Dear Yoko * 14. Real Love * 15. Imagine (live) 16. It’s Real |
E-TERNITY
The influence of ASH RA TEMPEL on ‘clever’ music is hard to pinpoint but it was deep. With the band broken up, one of its masterminds, Manuel Gottsching, continued to keep ahead of the time, and his 1981’s album “E2-E4” is close to the hearts of many, having been sampled for the dancefloor groovers all the world over. To show the creative fans his gratitude, Manuel wants to mark the record’s 20th anniversary by publishing those sample-inclusive cuts in mp3 form on his website. Herr Gottsching asks all the interested parties send the tracks toMGoArt@aol.com complete with title, date, DJ’s or producer’s name and cover photo if available. Fire off!
CAPTAIN BEYOND
Jon Lord may be too sophisticated for casual DEEP PURPLE fan when it concerns classical albums, but he’s always been able to come up with a melting pot of symphony and pop music which each his record is, and September 20th will see the release of another one in this vein, “Beyond The Notes”. It features the voices of not only Jon’s old friend Miller Anderson, ex-KEEF HARTLEY BAND and currently playing with THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP, and gorgeous Sam Brown, but also of Frida, the one “A” of ABBA. There are two poignant dedications on the album, to the great late Tony Ashton and Lord’s mother Miriam. Classy stuff, no doubt.
1. Miles Away 2. De Profundis 3. One From The Meadow (with Sam Brown) 4. Cologne Again 5. I’ll Send You A Postcard (Pavane For Tony) 6. The Sun Will Shine Again (with Frida) 7. A Smile When I Shook His Hand 8. November Calls (with Miller Anderson) 9. The Telemann Experiment 10. Music For Miriam |
NO SWEEPING EXIT, NO OFF-STAGE LINE
There are numerous concert albums by THE ROLLING STONES, yet forthcoming “Live Licks”, due out on September 27th, can become the best of the bunch, as those in attendance on the 2002-2003 “Licks” tour or owners of last year’s “Four Flicks” DVD set will easily suggest. Scattered over two discs, classics are plenty, with some very rare tracks thrown in for good measure, and several songs that weren’t on those DVDs at all. A thing to grab and love.
Disc One:1. Street Fighting Man |
Disc Two:17. Can’t You Hear Me Knocking |
After this, on October 12th out will be the long-awaited DVD of THE STONES’ “Rock And Roll Circus”, filmed in December 1968 and released on VHS and CD in 1996. This time it’s augmented with audio commentaries from Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Bill Wyman, JETHRO TULL’s Ian Anderson, Taj Mahal, Yoko Ono and Marianne Faithfull, all having played there, director Michael Lindsey-Hogg and cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond, an interview with Pete Townshend, plus a backstage footage, a previously unseen version of “Yer Blues” by THE DIRTY MAC – that is John Lennon, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Mitch Mitchell – three additional Taj Mahal songs and two classical performances by Julius Katchen. An amazing show that was – don’t miss the artefact!
