He may have just turned 85, yet Smokey Robinson shows no sign of willing to slow down – and why should he, if the soul veteran sounds as youthful as he always did? No wonder, then, that the erstwhile Miracle’s forthcoming album will start off with a track titled “Be Thankful For What You’ve Got” and features the covers of such life-affirming perennials as Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” and Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” – alongside fresh takes on Sam Cooke’s evergreen “What A Wonderful World” and a few more classics.
Out on April 25th, “What The World Needs Now” also includes a new version of Smokey’s own much-loved “Be Kind To The Growing Mind” from 1986, so there’s immense warmth to emanate from this album which feels like an obligatory listening.
