It’s impossible to say whether Todd Rundgren is a fan of a hilarious comedy starring Steve Carell or he simply pursues the eternal cosmic vision that’s always been there, on “A Wizard, A True Star” and other classic records, yet the musician’s forthcoming album, scheduled to be released on October 14th, shares the title with the series. “Space Force” will feature a solo performer or an ensemble on each of the dozen tracks – one of those is fittingly called “Artist In Residence” – including both usual suspects and completely unexpected guests.
Thus, “Your Fandango” (watch video below), Todd’s collaboration with SPARKS, was issued as limited edition color-vinyl single in the summer of 2021, and a couple of more songs have been made available earlier as well, and Rundgren played with THE LEMON TWIGS before, too, yet him having two former Zappa associates, guitarists Adrian Belew and Steve Vai, on the numbers which open and close the new album is little short of surprising. The same can be said of the presence here of such different players as Rick Nielsen and Thomas Dolby – but, perhaps, not about the participation of Neil Finn or THE ROOTS. In any case, “Space Force” promises to be a creative force to be reckoned with. (Read the review.)
