They may have never recorded together, yet Geezer Butler and Paul Rodgers have left an indelible impression on the face of rock, and the two actually graced the same stage on March 2nd, when both Englishmen took part in the inaugural Palm Springs Sound & Vision Awards, where they were joined by a stellar cast of kindred spirits. Led by Matt Sorum, whose drums accompanied all the performances, and featuring Nuno Bettencourt, Phil X and Steve Stevens on guitars, the singers’ array included Glenn Hughes – voicing not only “N.I.B.” he used to deliver during his short stint with BLACK SABBATH, when Butler wasn’t there, but also BAD COMPANY’s “Can’t Get Enough” which he never did – and Corey Taylor and Lzzy Hale, one of the people lending vocals on the recent tribute to the latter band.
PAUL RODGERS –
Sound & Vision
A pity, the two legends couldn’t play together that night, although Paul suggested they recorded something afterwards; also a pity, the “Sound & Vision” album has their old photos on the cover where a joint contemporary image might have been. More so, this unique offering is limited to double vinyl, at least initially, in the run of 2,000 units set to benefit the Adopt the Arts Foundation, co-founded by Sorum to restore and sustain music education in underserved public elementary schools.
The show was captured on video, and the resulting film will be screened at the platter release celebration on September 13th – at the Plaza Theatre in which the original show happened. Here’s hoping a CD / DVD version is in the pipleline too.
