THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT’s “Pyramid” Rises To Deluxe Heights

June 12, 2024

When THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT announced the release of “Pyramid: Work In Progress” comp for Record Store Day, there was little doubt as to which of the ensemble’s albums would be next in line for a deluxe treatment. And now the expanded reissue of “Pyramid” is officially scheduled for outing on August 23rd – in a variety of configurations, including color vinyl, a single CD and, of course, a multi-disc box set that will become a bane for true fans because its price is quite high due to inclusion of mixed formats.

Nick Lowe Rejects The Milk Of Human Kindness

June 12, 2024

Some artists remain forever young, others grow old, gracefully or not – and there are those who turn into elder statesmen. Nick Lowe may belong to the last category, as demonstrated by his platters from "The Convincer" onwards, and though the veteran’s run of creativity seemed to cease with the release of “Quality Street” in 2013, with an occasional glimpse of it on the triplet of EPs he issued with Americans LOS STRAITJACKETS in 2018-2020, the Englishman was reluctant to go for another album, preferring instead to go on the road. And yet September 13th will see a new full-length offering hit the shelves.

THE DAMNED Bring Their Reunion To The Masses

June 11, 2024

Those who follow long-serving punk bands of original generation aren’t usually too particular about their line-ups – one familiar face in the ranks should usually suffice to warrant the flow of sweet bile – but this rule doesn’t really work when it comes to THE DAMNED. Fans of this ensemble die to see the four founding fathers – singer Dave Vanian, drummer Rat Scabies, bassist Captain Sensible and guitarist Brian James get together again. There has been an occasional reunion over the years, yet during those meetups the punch of the classic quartet was diluted by the presence of later players – except, perhaps, for the show documented on the “Final Damnation” album in 1989 – and that seemed to be the last time the veterans shared the stage. Still, 2022 saw the gothic group return as a quadrumvirate for a series of performances – announced in 2020 before the pandemic forced the musicians to postpone the short trek.

Van Morrison Returns To School To Report On It Ten Years After

June 11, 2024

“Be just and fear not”: this was an inscription cut out on a school desk Van Morrison immortalized on his forthcoming concert album for that has been a tenet the grumpy Irishman lived by all his life and the onstage recording in question is a document of the veteran’s return to his old Belfast haunt, Orangefield Secondary School, in August 2014. Van’s three performances there, tied in with the educational institution’s closing, felt right for Morrison who first played in front of his alma mater’s audience 55 years earlier, in December 1959, fronting a band called MIDNIGHT SPECIAL.

SIMPLE MINDS’ Mel Gaynor Adds “Addicted To Love” To Solo Debut

June 10, 2024

Elton John’s “Ice On Fire” and “Secret Secrets” by Joan Armatrading, THE PRETENDERS’s “Get Close” and “Kite” by Kirsty MacColl: those who heard these records – although there are many more – must be familiar with Mel Gaynor‘s drumming, but, of course, the veteran’s name is much better known to those who follow SIMPLE MINDS, the band he spent more than two decades with, in three stints. However, while Mel occasionally contributed to the ensemble’s songwriting, it’s only now that he feels confident enough to begin a solo career – something he failed to do five years ago with a project called RISK… and something Gaynor tried to do as early as 2003, when a single “Addicted To Love” was released, the same song which serves as a finale of the first full-length album under his own name.
